New Delhi, July 18: India’s commercial space sector achieved a historic milestone on Saturday when the nation’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket successfully reached low Earth orbit. Developed by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, the Vikram-1 launch vehicle lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota during a mission named ‘Aagaman’. The four-stage, seven-storey-tall vehicle safely deployed multiple technology demonstration payloads, establishing India as the third country globally to possess private orbital launch capabilities.

The successful flight validated advanced manufacturing techniques, including an all-carbon composite structure and custom 3D-printed engines operating in a real flight environment. Following a brief planned hold due to navigation adjustments, the vehicle launched at 12:05 pm amidst cloudy skies. The rocket successfully reached a 450-kilometer low Earth orbit, releasing dedicated payloads from several domestic and international technology developers.

Prominent industry figures celebrated the flight as a structural shift for the nation’s domestic space market.

“The successful orbital launch of Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 (Mission Aagaman) is a defining milestone for India’s space journey,” stated Lt Gen. AK Bhatt (retd), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA). “By executing the nation’s first fully private orbital flight, Skyroot has shattered legacy boundaries, demonstrating that our domestic industry is primed to handle end-to-end space missions.”

The mission’s cargo combined commercial instrumentation with highly symbolic items. The payloads included a satellite debris-removal robotic arm from Cosmoserve Space, an earth-observation nanosatellite pathfinder by Grahaa Space, and Skyroot’s proprietary experimental monitoring unit. Alongside these systems, the vehicle carried an 18-karat gold miniature rocket and a handwritten postcard bearing the message “Vande Mataram” from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Former space agency leadership affirmed that the launch signals the dynamic growth of a broader space ecosystem.

“This is far more than the maiden orbital flight of a rocket, it marks the arrival of India’s private rocket building capability and reflects the remarkable transformation of our space ecosystem,” maintained former ISRO Chairman K. Sivan. He asserted that the breakthrough, built upon regulatory reforms and a strong institutional foundation, will open major opportunities for regional startups and the global space economy.
