Rohit Sharma Named Captain of ICC Men’s T20I Team of 2024

New Delhi, 25 January 2025: India captain Rohit Sharma, who led the team to their second ICC T20 World Cup title in June, has been announced as the skipper of the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year 2024. The team, heavily dominated by Indian players, also features Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh.

Rohit’s exceptional leadership and batting form defined his remarkable year. Scoring 378 runs across 11 matches at an average of 42.00 and a strike rate exceeding 160, he delivered three crucial half-centuries during India’s World Cup campaign.

One of his most notable contributions was a spectacular 92 against Australia in the Super Eight stage. His strategic approach to navigating high-pressure scenarios further cemented his position as one of India’s greatest T20I leaders.

Joining Rohit, all-rounder Hardik Pandya showcased his prowess by amassing 352 runs and picking up 16 wickets in 17 matches. Pandya’s defining moment came during the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, where he defended 16 runs in the final over and recorded figures of 3/20, securing India’s title win. His all-around consistency ensured his place as the top-ranked ICC Men’s T20I all-rounder.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah made an impactful return to T20I cricket in 2024, taking 15 wickets in eight matches at an extraordinary average of 8.26. Known for his lethal yorkers and control during death overs, Bumrah was a nightmare for opposition batters and a driving force behind India’s success. His stellar performance earned him a nomination for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy as ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year.

Young left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh emerged as India’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 36 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 13.50. Arshdeep’s ability to swing the ball upfront and execute pinpoint yorkers made him an invaluable asset. His standout performance came against the USA in the T20 World Cup, where he took 4/9 in a dazzling spell.

Apart from the Indian contingent, the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year features several top performers from around the world, including Australia’s Travis Head, England’s Phil Salt, Pakistan’s Babar Azam, West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, and Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga.
