New Delhi, August 4: Access to Al Jazeera’s English-language digital news outlet has been abruptly blocked for users across Pakistan following the outlet’s coverage of demonstrations and electoral developments in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Digital freedom monitoring groups and local users reported widespread access failures when attempting to reach the news platform.
The disruption follows a series of investigative dispatches published by the Qatar-headquartered broadcaster, which detailed military and police responses to public anger over elections and government policies in the region. Although official administrative machinery has maintained silence regarding a formal statutory ban, access restrictions remain effective across all major internet service providers in the country.
Taking to its official communications handle on social media, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry stated, “We have taken note of Al Jazeera’s selective reporting from handpicked polling stations in Muzaffarabad today. Through carefully chosen timings and scripted statements from selected individuals, the channel has sought to misrepresent the AJK elections and the voting process.”
Government representatives asserted that the foreign channel’s coverage served ulterior motives, declaring that “such yellow journalism only confirms the agenda of external actors with vested interests who are attempting to delegitimise this electoral exercise and undermine the popular will of the people of Muzaffarabad and AJK, clearly demonstrated today in their rejection of anarchy and coercion.”
Civil rights advocate bodies note that the digital blockade fits into a broader pattern of administrative oversight regarding foreign press presence in sensitive boundary areas, particularly during volatile election cycles.
