Assam, March 15 — Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday claimed that he was beaten and jailed for a week during the Congress government in Assam, accusing the party of obstructing peace in the state.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Shah recalled his detention under then-Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia.

“I have also been beaten up by the Congress government in Assam. We used to raise slogans against Indira Gandhi, and I had jail food for seven days,” ANI quoted him as saying.

Shah, accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, praised the academy’s renaming after 17th-century warrior Lachit Barphukan, saying it would become the country’s best police academy in five years.

“Lachit Barphukan’s story, once limited to Assam, is now being taught in 23 languages,” he added.

Highlighting Assam’s progress, Shah noted that the state’s conviction rate has risen from 5% to 25% in three years and is expected to surpass the national average.

He also announced ₹3 lakh crore in infrastructure projects for Assam, in addition to the ₹5 lakh crore investment proposed at a recent business summit.

Shah arrived in Dergaon on Friday for a three-day tour of Assam and Mizoram.
