MOHALI, April 17 — To strengthen law enforcement capabilities, the Punjab government has initiated a collaboration with IIT Ropar to deploy AI-driven systems for crime control. The partnership focuses on creating a comprehensive digital infrastructure to track gangsters and organized crime syndicates more effectively.
The initiative involves the creation of a sophisticated database that unifies fragmented police records. By using AI tools to scan and digitize handwritten documents and PDFs, the Punjab Police will be able to access a structured system containing the histories and patterns of known criminals. This technical support is expected to streamline decision-making and provide investigators with real-time tracking capabilities.
“The collaboration with IIT Ropar will strengthen AI and Machine Learning capabilities within the police force,” a senior Punjab Police official stated. The official asserted that personnel will be better prepared to recognize crime patterns, which serves as a major deterrent against the misuse of technology by criminal networks. The official also declared that the project aims to bridge the gap between various data sources, allowing for a more analytical approach to policing.
The technical framework will include dashboard-based monitoring and data analytics to assist in dismantling networks that operate from international locations. By leveraging the expertise of IIT Ropar, the state government intends to convert vast amounts of unstructured information into a searchable and queried database.
This project is being coordinated through the Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit at Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences in Mohali. Officials noted that the lack of integration between different record formats has historically slowed down the pace of investigations. With the new system, the state government maintains that police will be equipped with the tools necessary to target the roots of organized crime and enhance overall security for the citizens of Punjab.
