Mumbai, 17 November 2024: Mumbai police are investigating a bomb threat made to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Saturday after an anonymous caller identified himself as the “CEO of Lashkar-e-Taiba,” according to sources.
The call was received on the RBI’s customer care helpline around 11 a.m., where the individual threatened to detonate a bomb at the central bank.
Before making the threat, the caller sang a song, adding a bizarre twist to the alarming message.
The Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group, known for orchestrating the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks, was mentioned by the caller, prompting immediate concern from authorities.
“The nature of the call and the reference to a banned organization were taken seriously,” a police official stated. A case has been registered, and law enforcement is actively tracing the source of the threat.
This incident comes amid a surge in hoax bomb threats, particularly targeting airlines, which have disrupted hundreds of flights in recent months. Just last Thursday, an IndiGo flight from Nagpur to Kolkata made an emergency landing in Raipur following a bomb scare, which later turned out to be a false alarm. These recurring threats have raised serious concerns among security agencies and the aviation industry.
Reacting to the spate of fake threats, the central government has issued warnings to social media platforms, urging them to curb the spread of misinformation or face the potential loss of exemptions they currently enjoy under Indian regulations.
Authorities are on high alert as they continue to track down the source of the latest threat and assess its credibility.
