Chandigarh: A 36-day operational disruption commenced at Chandigarh railway station to facilitate major civil engineering works under the ongoing 462-crore-rupee station redevelopment project. Executed by the Rail Land Development Authority, the technical block involves erecting a massive through-roof structure and dismantling the old foot-over-bridge across platforms. Railway authorities stated that the rotational closure of lines and platforms will lead to the cancellation of 442 train trips, alongside diversions, short-terminations at Ambala Cantonment, and platform shifts for over seventy trains through mid-October.

The engineering work is structured into three distinct 12-day phases to keep portions of the facility functional throughout the construction period. Operations officials noted that the traffic block coincides with peak festival travel, prompting railway authorities to advise passengers to verify real-time train schedules prior to departure. The redevelopment initiative, designed to transform the station into a world-class multimodal transit hub, is expected to complete its primary structural phase during this block before final project wrap-up.
