Chandigarh, 28 Dec. 24: The Chandigarh traffic police have recorded ₹22.69 crore in fines from traffic violators in 2024, nearly doubling last year’s ₹10.35 crore. Out of 9.68 lakh challans issued by December 24, ITMS (Integrated Traffic Management System) cameras accounted for 8,28,672, while the remaining 1,40,286 were issued through on-the-spot enforcement devices.

“A large portion of challans is now generated through CCTV cameras, reflecting the growing role of technology in our operations,” said SSP Sumer Pratap Singh. “This system not only enables efficient monitoring but also ensures violators can settle fines online through personalized payment links.”

Chandigarh’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) has implemented over 2,000 AI-enabled CCTV cameras at 267 locations, covering 47 major traffic junctions. A 250-km fiber optic network supports the system, which automates violation detection.

“The AI-driven cameras identify offences like red-light jumping or speeding without constant operator supervision,” explained ICCC project manager Rudesh Kumar. “Once a violation is recorded, an operator reviews the footage, confirms the offence, and generates a challan. This method is more advanced than manual systems in other cities.”

Round-the-clock surveillance is handled by the Police Command and Control Centre (PCCC), staffed by 30-32 operators working across three shifts. DSP Ram Gopal, who leads the PCCC, highlighted that consistent monitoring ensures violations are tracked efficiently at all hours.

Red-light jumping emerged as the top violation, with 4,89,382 challans issued, followed by 1,45,307 for speeding. Helmet law violations also stood out, resulting in 84,616 challans.

“Red-light jumping is frequently captured due to 40 junctions equipped with dedicated cameras. In contrast, only 10 cameras are currently monitoring speeding violations, though plans are in place to expand their reach,” Kumar said.

The increased reliance on automated systems demonstrates the city’s commitment to stricter traffic enforcement and enhanced road safety.
