Chandigarh, 08 November 2023: Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, during his four-day visit to the state’s border districts, urged swift action to combat cross-border narcotics and arms smuggling, particularly through drones, and called for stronger efforts to address drug abuse and farm-related challenges in the border belt.
Kataria stressed the need for enhanced anti-drone technology and surveillance at the India-Pakistan border.
“The challenge of drones carrying narcotics and arms from Pakistan remains significant. The installation of an anti-drone system has begun, but we currently have only 12 units in place. With a 553-km border, we need to expedite this process,” the Governor stated.
He also mentioned that CCTV cameras are being set up at key spots along the border, with completion expected within 2-3 months.
The Governor mentioned the critical role of village defence committees (VDCs) in supporting border security forces and the police by providing information about suspicious activities.
“The VDCs’ efforts in assisting the BSF and police will continue to be acknowledged and appreciated,” Kataria said.
Addressing the issue of drug abuse, Kataria emphasized the need for coordinated efforts between the Centre and state governments to offer better opportunities for the youth in the border areas.
As part of this initiative, the Governor distributed sports kits to encourage young people to engage in positive activities.
On the matter of farmers, Kataria expressed concern over the difficulties faced by those owning land beyond the border fence, especially in receiving the ‘inconvenience compensation’ of Rs 10,000 per acre. He acknowledged that due payments for 2023 remain pending due to bureaucratic delays.
“I am aware that compensation dues are still pending, and I will work with the relevant governments to ensure they are paid,” he assured.
The Governor’s visit underscored the need for a multi-pronged approach to address these complex issues impacting Punjab’s border districts.
