Bihar, 2 February 2025: A complaint has been filed against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in a Muzaffarpur court, alleging that her “poor thing” remark about President Droupadi Murmu was disrespectful to the country’s highest constitutional authority.
The complaint, lodged by local lawyer Sudhir Ojha on Saturday, seeks the registration of an FIR against her.
Ojha has also named Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as co-accused, demanding legal action against them as well.
“Sonia Gandhi has insulted President Murmu by making the ‘poor thing’ remark. It is a direct affront to the dignity of the office. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are co-accused, and a case should be registered against them under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),” Ojha told reporters after submitting the complaint before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court.
The matter is scheduled for a hearing on February 10.
The controversy stems from Sonia Gandhi’s remarks following the President’s joint address to Parliament ahead of the Budget session.
Speaking to reporters outside the House, the former Congress chief commented, “The President was getting very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing,” referring to Murmu’s nearly hour-long speech.
Rahul Gandhi, also present, described the speech as “boring,” while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen alongside him.
Following the remarks, Rashtrapati Bhavan issued a statement calling the comment “unacceptable” and asserting that Murmu was not tired.
