CHENNAI, JULY 30 — Police authorities in Chennai arrested a 22-year-old domestic helper from Thanjavur district following the discovery of a newborn infant’s body inside a public disposal bin on Thyagappa Street in the Kilpauk neighborhood. The incident came to light after local residents noticed a suspicious plastic rice sack and immediately alerted local law enforcement personnel.
Investigators deployed to the scene secured the area, recovered the infant’s body, and transferred it to a nearby government hospital to undergo formal post-mortem procedures.
“Officers examined surveillance footage from nearby streets, which showed a woman placing the sack in the roadside bin during early morning hours, leading teams to trace and detain the suspect at her place of employment,” stated investigating officers from the local police station.
During preliminary questioning, police reported that the woman admitted to concealing her pregnancy before giving birth privately in late July. Fearing discovery by household members and neighbors, she allegedly smothered the child before disposing of the body. Authorities registered a formal case and summoned four additional individuals for questioning to ascertain whether any other persons had prior knowledge of the circumstances.
