Chandigarh, November 18, 2024: In a significant escalation of their ongoing protest, farmers’ organizations at the Shambhu and Khanuri borders have announced a march towards Delhi on December 6, demanding the fulfillment of promises made by the central and state governments.
Leaders from the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and United Kisan Morcha, who have been demonstrating at the Punjab-Haryana border for nine months, made this declaration during a press conference in Chandigarh on Monday.
Farmer leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal revealed plans to intensify the agitation, beginning with a hunger strike on November 26 at the Khanuri border.
They have issued a 10-day ultimatum to the government to resolve their issues, warning that failure to do so will result in a mass march towards the national capital.
“If there is no solution by then, we will march to Delhi with our tractor-trolleys carrying rations and tents,” Dallewal announced.
The farmers voiced their frustration over the government’s inaction, despite court orders to open the borders.
They expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of response during their nine-month-long peaceful protest, adding that their basic demands remain unaddressed.
According to the leaders, the central government had previously agreed to their demands in writing at the conclusion of the Delhi agitation but has not implemented the promised measures.
Raising specific grievances, the leaders pointed out the shortage of DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) fertilizer, which they claim has severely impacted the agricultural sector.
Dallewal warned that he would begin an indefinite hunger strike on November 26, vowing to continue until their demands are met. The farmers have held both the central and state governments accountable, with Dallewal stating, “If anything happens to me during the hunger strike, the government will bear full responsibility.”
The announcement marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing protest, signaling renewed efforts by the farmers to pressure the authorities into fulfilling their commitments made during the previous agitation.
