Kharar/Mohali, 21 November 2024: A Tanzanian student at Chandigarh University was allegedly killed by his Zambian batchmate, who later died by suicide in police custody, officials confirmed.
The victim, identified as Nuru Mari from Tanzania, was reportedly murdered by his 24-year-old classmate, Saviour Chikopela of Zambia. Following the incident, Chikopela was taken into custody and lodged in the Sunny Enclave police post lockup in Kharar, Mohali.
According to police officials, Chikopela was found hanging in the lockup early Wednesday. “He used a thin nylon rope tied to the lockup bars,” an officer stated. Authorities rushed him to the Kharar Civil Hospital at around 12:10 a.m., where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
While the exact circumstances surrounding the alleged murder and subsequent suicide remain unclear, police have provided limited details about the incidents. On Thursday morning, the Sunny Enclave police post gates were reportedly kept shut, and officers refrained from speaking to the media.
Both cases are under investigation as officials work to uncover the sequence of events leading to the deaths.
