New Delhi, 24 December 2024: Authorities in Delhi revoked the stringent anti-pollution measures under GRAP-4, following an improvement in air quality.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) for the capital stood at 364—categorized as “very poor”—on Monday evening, 36 points below the threshold mandated by the Supreme Court to enforce stage-4 restrictions.
The Sub-Committee for Implementing Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) noted a “consistent improvement” in the city’s air quality since the morning. GRAP-4 curbs, originally reimposed on December 16 due to a significant dip in air quality, included a ban on non-essential construction and demolition work and other restrictions to limit pollution.
Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department suggest the AQI is expected to remain in the “very poor” range in the coming days, supported by favorable wind patterns and meteorological conditions.
Officials warned, however, that vigilance remains key. “Although air quality has seen temporary relief, sustained measures are critical to ensuring further progress,” a senior pollution control official stated.
GRAP-4 is the strictest level in Delhi’s air pollution control framework, activated when AQI readings exceed 400, indicating “severe” pollution levels harmful to public health. Authorities will monitor conditions closely to decide on further interventions.
