CHANDIGARH, APRIL 16 — The Haryana government is considering the implementation of a sophisticated “Glideways” pod taxi system to modernize urban transit across the state’s growing cities. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini met with a high-level delegation from Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation and the American-based Glideways company on Wednesday to discuss potential partnerships for the driverless transit project.

The discussions at the Chief Minister’s residence focused on the feasibility of the automated system, which utilizes small, on-demand pods to transport passengers. Officials assessed potential corridors, investment models, and the possibility of utilizing Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to bring the project to fruition. The state aims to provide world-class infrastructure that reduces travel time and offers a sustainable alternative to traditional road transport.

“The Haryana Government is committed to developing world-class infrastructure within the state and providing citizens with superior transportation facilities,” Chief Minister Saini affirmed during the meeting. He noted that the initiative aligns with the requirements of future Smart Cities by prioritizing energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.

The project is expected to receive support from the Government of India under the “Urban Challenge Fund,” a program designed to boost urban infrastructure and attract international investment. Technical experts stated that the automated system would significantly alleviate traffic congestion in densely populated areas while enhancing the overall safety of the urban commute.
