Chandigarh, 14 February 2025– Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Batra on Friday urged the Centre to ensure Haryana receives its full share of space in the Vidhan Sabha complex, which it shares with Punjab in Chandigarh.
Speaking in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the inaugural session of an orientation programme for Haryana MLAs, Batra raised the decades-old issue of asset bifurcation following Haryana’s creation in 1966. He said that while Haryana was allocated 40% of the assembly building, it currently has access to only 27%, with Punjab retaining 13% of its rightful share.
“We must get our 13% share of rooms in the assembly, which Punjab continues to occupy. The Centre should facilitate this, especially since there is a BJP government both at the Centre and in the state,” Batra said, reinforcing Haryana’s push for a separate Vidhan Sabha complex in the Union Territory.
Birla, who inaugurated the programme scheduled to conclude on Saturday, did not comment on the issue.
The matter of Haryana’s share in the joint capital’s infrastructure has been repeatedly raised by successive governments. In recent years, the demand for a dedicated Haryana Vidhan Sabha building has gained traction, with the state government proposing a new complex to ease space constraints.
At present, Haryana’s 90-member assembly faces a shortage of office space for ministers and legislative committees. Officials say Punjab continues to occupy 20 rooms that should have been handed over to Haryana under the agreed 60:40 division of assets.
