New Delhi, 2 February 2025: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has strongly condemned the Delhi Police for detaining on-duty journalists and cameramen covering the Delhi Vidhan Sabha election as several media personnel were allegedly held overnight, raising concerns over press freedom and journalists’ rights.
IJU President K. Sreenivas Reddy and Secretary General Balwinder Singh Jammu stated that the police failed to acknowledge journalists’ identity cards. “If there were doubts about the authenticity of their credentials, the police could have verified them with their respective media houses instead of taking such action,” Reddy said.
Punjab and Chandigarh Journalists Union leaders Balbir Singh Jandu and Jai Singh Chhibber have called for the intervention of the Press Council of India, demanding an inquiry. “This incident reflects a disturbing state of affairs. Such treatment of journalists is unacceptable and requires immediate attention,” they said.
The union has urged authorities to take corrective measures and ensure that journalists can perform their duties without fear or obstruction.
