Centuries-old monastery damaged as hundreds of drones and missiles pound Ukrainian cities

Kyiv, June 16: A major wave of overnight Russian missile and drone strikes across Ukraine has left at least 11 people dead and dozens injured while severely damaging one of the country’s most revered spiritual heritage sites. The coordinated assault deployed hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles simultaneously, causing widespread fires and destruction across major urban centres, including the capital city of Kyiv and northeastern Kharkiv.

The strikes triggered a serious fire on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral within the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a centuries-old monastery complex and protected UNESCO World Heritage site. This unexpected devastation occurred shortly after separate high-level phone calls between US President Donald Trump and both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Russian President Putin, which had initially raised domestic hopes for an impending diplomatic breakthrough.

Ukrainian officials confirmed that the overnight bombardment killed 11 individuals, including emergency responders, and left 53 others wounded countrywide. In the capital alone, five residents lost their lives as intense explosions forced thousands to seek emergency shelter underground while smoke blanketed residential districts, hitting apartment buildings and local markets.

President Zelenskyy visited the damaged religious complex with government representatives, describing the incident as a targeted assault on cultural and spiritual history. Religious leaders strongly condemned the destruction of the landmark, appealing for global support to safeguard the historic sanctuary. French officials echoed these concerns, comparing the severity of the damage to a direct attack on a foundational European cultural monument.

The Russian Defence Ministry claimed its operations successfully targeted military production workshops, long-range drone facilities, and industrial complexes in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Ukrainian authorities countered these assertions, stating that the extensive damage to residential properties and historical landmarks indicates a clear intention to sustain pressure on civilian areas. President Zelenskyy stated that he will use the upcoming G7 summit in France to urge international leaders to provide advanced anti-ballistic air defence capabilities.
