New Delhi, November 26, 2024: The Indian government has sharply criticized the arrest and denial of bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, urging Bangladesh to uphold the safety, security, and rights of Hindus and other minorities.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed concern over the incident, highlighting a series of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. In a statement, the MEA said, “It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges are pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings. We also note with concern the attacks on minorities protesting peacefully against the arrest of Shri Das.”
Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested near Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on sedition charges. Although police did not seek his remand, a court denied his bail and ordered his transfer to judicial custody, ensuring he would receive all religious privileges during detention.
The arrest sparked widespread protests, with Das’ supporters gathering outside the court complex and chanting slogans in his favor. The case relates to an October 30 rally where 19 individuals, including Das, were accused of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag.
India’s call for action underscores growing regional concerns over minority rights in Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence and respect for freedom of expression and assembly.
