SC Dismisses Plea to Replace EVMs with Ballot Papers

New Delhi, November 26, 2024: The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking the replacement of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with ballot papers for conducting elections in India.

During the hearing, Justice Vikram Nath addressed allegations of EVM tampering, remarking that political leaders often question the integrity of EVMs when they lose but remain silent when victorious. The court found no merit in the petition and decided to reject it.

The petitioner argued that EVMs were vulnerable to tampering, citing concerns expressed by various political figures and international personalities, including Elon Musk. He also claimed that evidence of irregularities involving EVMs had been observed in recent elections. Further demands in the petition included stricter measures against candidates found guilty of corruption.

The petitioner emphasized that the plea aimed to enhance public awareness about the electoral process, warning that unchecked practices could harm democracy. However, the court declined to entertain these arguments, reaffirming its stance on the reliability of EVMs in the electoral process.

Political parties opposing the use of EVMs had also filed related petitions, but the Supreme Court refused to hear them, upholding its confidence in the current voting system.
