New Delhi, 11 November 2024: Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday, succeeding Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath during a brief ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10:30 AM.
Justice Khanna’s appointment follows Justice Chandrachud’s retirement on Sunday, marking the end of his tenure after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, outgoing CJI Chandrachud, and other ministers, as well as current and former judges of the Supreme Court.
Justice Khanna, appointed to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, will serve a tenure of just under six months as CJI, retiring on May 13, 2025. The Centre officially notified his appointment on October 24, following Justice Chandrachud’s recommendation on October 16.
