Ludhiana, June 9– Tensions flared in Sahnewal after a 50-year-old man was kidnapped allegedly by the family members of a woman whose recent court marriage to a local youth defied their approval. Police have booked ten people, including five identified and five unknown accused, under kidnapping charges.
The case came to light after Sarita Devi, a resident of Gill Colony, lodged a complaint stating that her son Suraj Kumar had married Mandeep Kaur in court on June 3, much to the disapproval of Mandeep’s family.
“On the night of June 7, her brothers Vikramjit Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Narinder Singh, and uncle Manjit Singh, along with five others, came to our house looking for Suraj. When they couldn’t find him, they forcibly took away my husband Jayant Singh,” Sarita told the police.
She also alleged that Kushal, a friend of her son, helped the accused carry out the abduction.
Police managed to rescue the victim, Jayant Singh, shortly after the complaint was filed. “We have registered a kidnapping case and launched raids to arrest the absconding accused,” said ASI Gurvinder Singh, the investigating officer.
The case has added to concerns over vigilante actions in matters of interfaith or inter-caste marriages, which continue to spark violence and family feuds despite legal protection.
