Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, March 17: MLA Kulwant Singh has directed the district administration to urgently install essential traffic signage, including zebra crossings, stop lines, and speed limit boards, to address road safety concerns in Mohali with Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal directing the Municipal Corporation (MC) to address these deficiencies within a week and the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) within two weeks.
At an emergency meeting with officials on Sunday, he stressed the need for immediate action, stating that the newly implemented City Surveillance and Traffic Management System should focus on public convenience rather than being a revenue-generating tool.
“The CCTV system should not be used just for issuing challans; it must ensure smooth and safe movement for commuters,” said Singh.
“People have raised concerns about missing or unclear road markings, and we cannot ignore these basic requirements.”
Following his intervention, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal directed the Municipal Corporation (MC) to address these deficiencies within a week and the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) within two weeks.
She underlined that zebra crossings must be fully accessible and free of obstacles like footpaths and poles.
Mittal also ordered the installation of speed limit signs across the city, similar to Chandigarh, so that commuters clearly understand the permissible speed for different vehicles.
“Punjab’s speed limit for urban areas is set at 50 km/h, but we will formally request the government to align Mohali’s speed regulations with the Tricity model,” she said.
SSP Deepak Pareek suggested linking traffic light controls with the Integrated Command and Control Center at Sohana to improve signal coordination.
“If all major traffic signals are centrally managed, we can ensure better flow and reduce congestion,” he said. The Deputy Commissioner asked the MC Commissioner to review the feasibility of this proposal.
Pareek also proposed restricting heavy vehicles on certain roads during peak hours, a suggestion that will be considered by the administration.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including SDM Mohali Damanpreet Kaur, SP (Traffic) H.S. Mann, Transport Officer Pradeep Singh Dhillon, executive engineers from MC and GMADA, an NHAI representative, and District Road Safety Committee member Harpreet Singh
