Serbia/Moscow, 14 November 2024: Alexei Zimin, a prominent Russian TV chef known for his vocal criticism of the Kremlin’s policies, particularly the Ukraine invasion, was found dead in a Belgrade hotel room, according to BBC reports citing Russian media. Zimin, 52, had relocated to London after denouncing Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea but continued to host a popular cookery show on NTV, which was canceled after he shared an anti-war message following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. He was visiting Serbia to promote his latest book, Anglomania.

Serbian authorities noted there were “no suspicious circumstances” surrounding Zimin’s death, pending autopsy and toxicology results. Katerina Ternovskaya, co-owner of the Serbian restaurant where he had presented his book, expressed disbelief, saying, “The last time we saw him, he was smiling and in great spirits.” His dinner event was reportedly a success, with Zimin described as “very happy” throughout the evening.

Zimin’s UK-based restaurant, ZIMA, confirmed his passing on Instagram, expressing deep sorrow. The statement read, “Alexei was not just a colleague but a close friend with whom we shared countless memories, both joyful and somber.” The restaurant conveyed gratitude for the support received from well-wishers and extended condolences to Zimin’s family, noting the profound impact of his loss on their team and the wider community.

Zimin had been a familiar figure in Russia’s culinary scene, gaining popularity through his cookery show and various ventures. His outspoken political stance, however, led to increased scrutiny, especially after he criticized the Russian government’s actions in Ukraine. His relocation to London was part of an effort to distance himself from the growing restrictions on free speech in Russia.

Despite moving abroad, Zimin maintained his connection with Russian audiences until his show was canceled in response to his anti-war statements. The sudden news of his death has left his supporters and colleagues in shock, highlighting the complex interplay between his culinary achievements and his political views.
