CHANDIGARH, APRIL 25 — Several high-profile political leaders and public figures in Punjab have reportedly received threatening messages from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang after voicing opposition to a controversial web series. Gurdaspur MP and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa stated Friday that he was among those targeted by the gang via WhatsApp after he demanded a ban on the documentary titled “Lawrence of Punjab.”

The threats follow a decision by the Government of India to prohibit the release of the series, a move prompted by significant public outcry and objections from Punjabi leadership. Randhawa affirmed that he has officially notified Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav regarding the communication. The lawmaker maintained that such threats represent a serious security challenge and noted that similar messages were sent to Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and Balkaur Singh, the father of the late singer Sidhu Moosewala.

Randhawa raised serious concerns regarding the oversight of incarcerated individuals, questioning how Lawrence Bishnoi remains capable of influencing external activities while lodged in Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail. He stated that there appears to be a lapse in supervision, alleging that some gangsters operate with a level of freedom that suggests a lack of departmental control. He also noted reports of other high-profile inmates, such as Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, allegedly accessing mobile devices while in custody in Dibrugarh Jail.

Responding to the developments, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring declared that the Punjab Congress remains undeterred by intimidation. He asserted that the party’s primary objective is to ensure a state free from the influence of organized crime. Warring stated that the collective opposition to the glorification of gangsters in media was a necessary step to protect the social fabric of the region.
