Chandigarh, December 27, 2024: Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar today outlined major strides made by the Jail Department in 2024, emphasizing enhanced security and rehabilitation measures.
A high-security jail, under construction near Ludhiana at a cost of ₹100 crore, will house 300 dangerous prisoners upon completion. Advanced security technologies are also being deployed, including AI-based CCTV surveillance in eight central jails to curb contraband smuggling and unauthorized mobile use. The V-Kavach Jammer, already operational in Central Jail Bathinda, will be installed in 12 other sensitive jails, complemented by a CRPF company stationed in Bathinda.
To improve prisoner communication and curb illegal mobile usage, over 750 calling systems are being installed across jails. High-security areas are being equipped with X-ray baggage scanners, and comprehensive CCTV coverage is underway.
Internal security has been bolstered with the creation of a Research, Analysis, and Intelligence Wing since October 2023, focusing on intelligence-based operations and inmate behavior analysis.
Rehabilitation initiatives include educational and skill development programs. Under the “Sikhya Daat Project,” 2,200 prisoners are pursuing courses, while 513 are enrolled in vocational training like electrical work and tailoring. Additionally, two new petrol pumps at Nabha and Fazilka have expanded the department’s commercial ventures to eight locations.
Staffing needs are being addressed with 738 warders and 25 matrons recently recruited. Recruitment for 179 security posts is ongoing, and 1,220 new positions across cadres have been approved for hiring.
