Chandigarh, JAN 4: In a major expansion of public healthcare coverage, the Punjab government on Friday signed an agreement to provide cashless medical treatment of up to ₹10 lakh per family to all households in the state, with the scheme scheduled to begin Jan. 15.

The agreement for the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) was signed between the State Health Agency, Punjab, and United India Insurance Company, officials said.

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said the new scheme will extend health insurance to nearly 65 lakh families, making it one of the most extensive universal healthcare programs in the country.

“Earlier schemes offered coverage of ₹5 lakh and were limited to certain sections,” Singh said. “Now every family in Punjab, including government employees and pensioners, will be eligible for cashless treatment up to ₹10 lakh.”

The memorandum was signed by SHA CEO Sanyam Aggarwal and United India Insurance Company Executive Director Mathew George.

According to the government, United India Insurance Company will provide insurance coverage of ₹1 lakh per family. Expenses beyond that limit, up to ₹10 lakh, will be covered by the State Health Agency through a trust-based arrangement.

Singh said the scheme has been designed to ensure universal access, with no income ceiling or exclusion criteria.

Enrollment will be facilitated through common service centers using Aadhaar and voter identity cards. Beneficiaries will be issued MMSY health cards, and a helpline will be operational to assist residents with the enrollment process.

The scheme will follow Health Benefit Package 2.2 and include more than 2,000 treatment packages spanning secondary and tertiary care.

Patients can seek treatment at 824 empaneled hospitals across Punjab, including public health institutions, central government hospitals and private facilities. The government said additional hospitals will be empaneled as implementation progresses.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, will formally launch the scheme on Jan. 15, 2026, officials said.
