CHANDIGARH, MAY 15 — Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra announced Thursday that Punjab will undergo a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of its electoral rolls to ensure a completely transparent and accurate voter list. The Election Commission of India has issued a notification for the exercise, which involves over 24,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visiting households across the state from June 25 to July 24, 2026.
The primary goal of the revision is the inclusion of every eligible citizen while purging ineligible entries from the records. Mitra noted that having duplicate voter registrations is a constitutional offense punishable by up to one year of imprisonment. To facilitate this, the election machinery has been fully mobilized, with each BLO assigned approximately 300 households to ensure thorough verification.
“Our objective is to include every eligible citizen in electoral roll and remove ineligible persons,” Mitra affirmed. She maintained that preparatory training for the staff will take place between June 15 and June 24. Currently, the state has already completed 83.69 percent of its pre-revision mapping, covering over 1.79 crore voters out of a total electorate of 2.14 crore.
The draft electoral roll is scheduled for publication on July 31, 2026, following which citizens can submit claims or objections until August 30. The final electoral rolls are set to be published on October 1, 2026. Mitra stated that while Aadhaar cards will be used for identification, they will not serve as proof of citizenship. She also appealed to political parties to appoint Booth Level Agents to assist in the smooth execution of the process.
