Punjab’s Air Quality Worsens As Stubble Burning Intensifies

by The_unmuteenglish

Chandigarh, 20 November 2024: Air quality in Punjab has deteriorated significantly, with 888 stubble-burning incidents reported on Monday—the highest this season.

According to reports, pollution levels have soared, exposing residents to health issues like cough, cold, and fever. Many people are resorting to masks as toxic smoke blankets the state.

The air quality index (AQI) has reached alarming levels in several cities, exacerbated by the combination of stubble burning and stagnant weather conditions.

According to the Meteorological Department, a drop in temperature and increased moisture due to Western Disturbance have led to dense fog formation. Low wind speeds and humidity are trapping smoke, creating a smog layer that blocks sunlight.

Temperatures in Punjab dipped to 10 degrees last night, with major cities expected to see temperatures ranging from 9 to 26 degrees today.

The situation is likely to worsen if rains do not arrive soon.

Despite the environmental crisis, stubble-burning incidents continue unabated, adding to the state’s pollution woes.
