New Delhi, July 29: Emergency personnel resumed search operations along the Yamuna River in East Delhi on Tuesday, following a tragic drowning incident that left two men dead and two others missing near Zero Pusta Road in Geeta Colony. Rescuers face significant hurdles due to elevated water levels and rapid currents triggered by recent rainfall.
The incident unfolded on Monday evening near Madina Masjid after four acquaintances met in the Gandhi Nagar area and subsequently entered the river for a swim. Emergency responders were alerted around 7:20 pm, prompting a joint response from the Delhi Fire Services, local police, and specialized rescue teams.
Fire Officer Deshpal confirmed the deployment of rescue units from the Geeta Colony and Laxmi Nagar stations, stating, “Our teams reached the spot immediately after receiving the call. One body was recovered during the initial operation, while search efforts for the remaining persons are continuing.”
During the initial response on Monday night, personnel retrieved the body of 40-year-old Sonu before low visibility forced a temporary suspension of work. Operations resumed early Tuesday morning with professional divers, leading to the recovery of 32-year-old Rajan around 9:40 am. Search teams maintain active efforts to locate 27-year-old Hemant and 35-year-old Sachin.
Fire brigade officials noted that high water levels and poor underwater visibility continue to hinder deep-water search procedures. In light of the hazardous conditions, authorities urged residents to avoid entering the river during the monsoon season, while local police maintained that formal statements from family members will be recorded upon the conclusion of the search.
