Chandigarh, December 30, 2024: The Punjab Government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has achieved significant milestones in improving urban civic services and ensuring environmental sustainability in 2024, according to Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh.

Dr. Singh announced that Punjab’s sewage treatment capacity has been expanded from 2142 MLD (million liters per day) to 2634.15 MLD with the addition of 492.15 MLD this year. Furthermore, 52 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), with a total capacity of 607 MLD and an estimated cost of ₹650 crore, are under construction and are expected to be operational within the next two years.

To address the growing reliance on groundwater, the state is implementing large-scale surface water supply projects. Operational projects include those in Amritsar (440 MLD), Jalandhar (275 MLD), and Patiala (115 MLD). The 580 MLD Ludhiana Water Supply Project is also nearing completion. Besides, 87 towns have adopted surface water supply systems, with pilot “Drink from Tap” projects being rolled out in Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Jalandhar.

The state has also prioritized waste management under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), with ₹401.73 crore allocated for purchasing machinery, setting up waste processing facilities, and disposing of legacy waste. To further enhance urban sanitation, 730 sewer cleaning machines are being procured at a cost of ₹39.55 crore.

Dr. Singh accentuated that these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening urban infrastructure, supported by a ₹450 crore grant for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the current financial year. These efforts aim to meet the demands of Punjab’s urban population while ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment.
