NUH, May 6 — A wedding celebration in Haryana’s Mewat region descended into violence on Tuesday after a massive garland made of currency notes worth ₹25 lakh sparked a confrontation between two groups. The incident, which occurred in Nehda village within the Punhana subdivision, led to a stone-pelting clash over the order of ceremonial honors for the groom.
The conflict began during the preparations for the wedding procession of the groom, identified as Pappu. Witnesses stated that a dispute erupted after the groom’s brother-in-law, Nayoom, adorned him with the multimillion-rupee cash garland. Relatives from a neighboring village in Uttar Pradesh reportedly objected, demanding the procession wait for their own ceremonial garland to arrive before departing.
The verbal disagreement quickly escalated, with both factions engaged in stone-pelting that caused panic among the guests. While police officials arrived shortly after to restore order, they affirmed that no formal complaints have been filed by either party involved in the skirmish.
“What began as an argument soon escalated into a confrontation,” an eyewitness noted, describing the shift from celebration to chaos. Local police maintained that they are conducting inquiries into the matter despite the lack of a formal report. The event has once again brought the region’s tradition of extravagant cash displays into the national spotlight, as social media footage of the garland and the subsequent fight garnered widespread attention.
