London, 22 November 2024 – The UK is preparing for severe weather as Storm Bert is expected to bring heavy snow, rain, and strong winds this weekend, prompting widespread warnings. The Met Office has issued a yellow alert for snow and ice, which will remain in effect until Friday, November 22. This marks the second named storm of the season, following a series of extreme weather events impacting parts of the UK.

In Scotland, over 100 schools have been closed, while nearly 200 schools in Devon and Cornwall are also shut due to snow and hazardous conditions.

The storm is predicted to bring wind gusts of up to 70 mph (113 km/h), with some areas facing up to 100 mm of rain. These conditions are expected to cause significant travel disruptions and flooding, especially in parts of Wales and Southwest England.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution as local authorities warn of treacherous driving conditions. “Drivers should check the forecasts before heading out, especially in areas expected to bear the brunt of Storm Bert,” said a spokesperson for the Met Office.

The severe weather could result in dangerous travel conditions, with ice warnings in effect due to overnight temperatures dropping below freezing.

Meteorologists are predicting that further warnings may be issued as the storm progresses. “Overnight temperatures will drop below zero widely, leading to ice risks. We anticipate further warnings through the week,” the spokesperson added. As the storm intensifies, authorities are urging the public to stay updated on weather forecasts and prepare for potential disruptions.
