Khartoum, 16 February 2025: Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yusuf urged the UK to adopt a cooperative approach with Sudan rather than confrontation at international forums, according to state news agency SUNA, as reported by Anadolu.
During a meeting with Christian Turner, director-general for political affairs at the UK Foreign Ministry, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Yusuf outlined Sudan’s current situation and the government’s efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid.
“Sudan and the UK should engage as friends rather than confront each other at international forums, as this has proven to be ineffective,” Yusuf said. He stressed that any initiatives concerning Sudan must be conducted in consultation with and approved by the government to have real impact.
Ongoing Conflict and International Stance
The civil war, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, has led to tens of thousands of deaths and widespread displacement. Amid ongoing hostilities, Sudan’s government has pushed back against external pressures.
In November 2024, Khartoum welcomed Russia’s veto at the UN Security Council, which blocked a British-backed resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire and the safe passage of civilians.
