New Delhi, August 4: The Union government has urged state administrations across the country to set up dedicated courts under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act to address the growing backlog of pending drug-related cases. Official data indicates that nearly 3.9 lakh cases under the anti-narcotics framework are currently awaiting judicial resolution in various state jurisdictions.
Addressing the requirement for specialized judicial infrastructure, central authorities noted that dedicated benches are essential to streamline legal proceedings and ensure timely disposal of matters involving narcotics offences. Judicial statistics indicate substantial variance in state-level infrastructure, with several regions managing heavy caseloads through existing general courts rather than designated special tribunals.
Communicating the policy direction to state judicial departments, Union officials affirmed, “Establishing specialized courts remains a critical step toward ensuring fast-track proceedings and maintaining the integrity of law enforcement efforts against narcotics networks.”
Central policy coordinators asserted that creating specialized judicial capacity will significantly reduce procedural delays and assist state enforcement agencies in maintaining structured, time-bound legal accountability.
