Ferozepur, October 16, 2024: Ravi Kumar, a young man currently incarcerated in Ferozepur jail, has been elected as the sarpanch of Madhyare village in the recent panchayat elections.
Despite being behind bars, Kumar managed to file his nomination and garnered major support from the villagers, winning the election while still in jail.
The election saw a total of 290 votes cast in Madhyare, with 272 villagers participating in the voting process. Kumar secured 137 votes, leading to his victory as the newly elected sarpanch. The news has brought joy to both his family and the villagers, who believe in his potential to transform the village.
Kumar’s family maintains that he is a victim of fraud, which led to his imprisonment. They expressed optimism that he would soon be released and focus on the development of Madhyare.
Villagers have also shown confidence in Kumar’s leadership abilities, believing he will positively change the village’s image, they said.
Ravi Kumar’s father spoke about his son’s dedication to the community, saying, “He has worked hard to keep people away from drugs. He has kept horses, built arenas, and organized wrestling events, which the community appreciates.”
He added that Kumar’s imprisonment is a result of political machinations, but he remains hopeful about the judicial process. “If he were out of jail, the villagers would have unanimously elected him as sarpanch,” he claimed.
