Mohali, 17 January 2025: Six youths, including three minors, suffered multiple fractures and deep wounds after being attacked with swords at the Phase 3-5 light point in Mohali on Tuesday night. Police said the assault stemmed from an altercation on New Year’s Eve and involved a carefully planned trap.

According to police, a group of men used a fake social media profile posing as a woman to lure the victims to TDI Market in Sector 117, Mohali. When the victims arrived, the accused, traveling in three cars, allegedly attacked them with swords. The victims managed to escape in a Maruti Swift Dzire, but their car was intercepted near the Phase 3-5 light point, where they were brutally assaulted and their vehicle vandalized before the attackers fled.

“The victims, aged 17 to 19, were admitted to a private hospital in Mohali and are undergoing treatment. The accused showed no hesitation in inflicting severe injuries,” a police investigator said.

Acting on a complaint by one of the injured, a 19-year-old student at GGDSD College, Chandigarh, police registered a case at the Phase-1 police station and booked 16 men under charges including rioting, attempted murder, and causing grievous hurt. Within 48 hours, five accused were arrested.

The arrested individuals, aged 22 to 25, include Gursewak Singh, a dairy farmer; Prabhjot Singh, a student at Panjab University; Manjinder Singh, a student at Chandigarh College; and Pargat Singh and Bhawan Preet Singh, both farmers. All are residents of Sohana and Banur, police said.

Preliminary investigation revealed the attack was motivated by a New Year’s Eve altercation in Sector 87, Mohali, between Gursewak Singh and the complainant. Despite efforts by onlookers to resolve the dispute that night, the accused reportedly decided to retaliate.

Police have invoked Sections 126(2), 115(2), 118(1), 109, 324(4), 191(3), and 190 of the Indian Penal Code in the case. “Further investigations are underway, and we are working to apprehend the remaining suspects,” an officer said.
