Georgia, 16 December 2024: Twelve Indian nationals were found dead at a restaurant in the mountain resort of Gudauri, Georgia, with authorities identifying carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death, local media reported. Initial inspections revealed no signs of injuries or violence, according to Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The victims, reportedly employees of an Indian restaurant, were discovered in bedrooms on the second floor of the facility. “The mission has just learned about the death of 12 Indian nationals in Gudauri, Georgia. Deepest condolences to the bereaved families. The mission is in touch with local authorities to get details and provide assistance,” read a statement from the Indian embassy in Tbilisi.

While the Indian mission confirmed all 12 victims were Indian citizens, Georgia’s Interior Ministry reported that 11 were foreigners and one was a Georgian national.

Preliminary investigations suggested that a power generator, likely switched on after a power outage Friday night, was placed in a closed space near the bedrooms, leading to the release of carbon monoxide. The police have launched an investigation under Article 116 of Georgia’s Criminal Code, which deals with negligent manslaughter.

A forensic medical examination has been ordered to determine the precise cause of death. Investigative actions, including on-site forensic-criminalistics assessments and interviews with relevant individuals, are ongoing.
