462 Die in Road Accidents Daily in India in 2022

New Delhi/Chandigarh, 7 February 2025:India recorded an average of 462 road accident deaths per day in 2022, with Tamil Nadu leading in total accidents and Uttar Pradesh reporting the highest fatalities, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ annual report on “Road Accidents in India.”

The country saw 4.61 lakh road accidents in 2022, a 12% increase from 4.12 lakh in 2021, resulting in 1.68 lakh deaths, a 9% rise from the previous year. The highest number of victims were aged 25-35, accounting for 42,671 deaths.

Tamil Nadu reported 64,105 accidents, the most in any state, followed by Madhya Pradesh (54,432), Kerala (43,910), and Uttar Pradesh (41,746). However, Uttar Pradesh led in fatalities, with 22,595 deaths, followed by Tamil Nadu (17,884), Maharashtra (15,224), and Madhya Pradesh (13,427).

Fatalities among people under 18 rose from 7,764 in 2021 to 9,528 in 2022, while deaths among those aged 60 and above increased from 11,739 to 13,636.

Lakshadweep reported the lowest figures, with just three accidents and two deaths.

The report stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy to tackle the root causes of accidents, such as speeding, reckless driving, intoxication, and noncompliance with traffic laws. It recommended stricter enforcement, better driver education, and investment in safer road and vehicle infrastructure.
