Hoshiarpur, March 27 — The district administration in Hoshiarpur on Thursday demolished a house illegally built on panchayat land by drug peddler Gurmeet Kaur in Nainowal Vaid village.

Police said the action was part of the Punjab government’s ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign.

SSP Sandeep Kumar Malik said Kaur, wife of Balwinder Singh, has eight cases registered against her under the NDPS Act, with convictions in three. Despite repeated warnings from the village panchayat, she had refused to vacate the encroached land.

The village panchayat, present during the demolition, praised the government’s efforts, stating that such actions would help curb the drug menace.

Police deployed an adequate force during the operation to maintain law and order.

Under the ongoing campaign, the district police have attached properties worth over ₹25 crore belonging to drug smugglers. Since March 1, 2025, they have intensified checks, registering 128 cases, arresting 191 accused, and seizing 4 kg of drug powder, 8,110 pills, 707 grams of heroin, 2.306 kg of opium, and ₹23,400 in drug money.

Malik said the crackdown will continue to target drug networks in the region.
