CHANDIGARH, June 21– Senior Indian Police Service officer Pushpendra Kumar has been given additional charge as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) for Chandigarh, according to a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Kumar, a 2006-batch officer from the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, will serve in the top position until a regular appointment is finalized. He will simultaneously continue in his role as Inspector General (IG) of Chandigarh Police.

Kumar took over as IG on June 5, following his transfer from Delhi, where he held the post of Joint Commissioner (Eastern Range). Prior to this, he also served in significant capacities within the Ministry of Defence.

The current arrangement follows the transfer of Raj Kumar Singh, the former IG and acting DGP of Chandigarh, who has been moved back to Delhi.

A Home Ministry official confirmed the temporary nature of the assignment. “Pushpendra Kumar has been entrusted with dual responsibilities to ensure administrative continuity in the Union Territory’s police leadership,” the official said.

Since taking charge in Chandigarh, Kumar has been visible in public outreach efforts.

He recently led the “Drug-Free India” Walkathon on June 12, signalling his commitment to community-oriented policing.

With dual charges in hand, Kumar is expected to steer the force through an interim period marked by both operational demands and leadership transition.
