Chandigarh, July 14: Chirag Veer Singh Sarao has become the first keshdhari Sikh American to join the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. The milestone was announced by the American Sikh Council, marking a significant moment of inclusion for the community within the elite military institution.

“He received the religious accommodation on June 20 to serve with his articles of faith and remain grounded in his core identity,” the Council stated. This special clearance allows Sarao, who keeps his hair and beard unshorn as a part of his religious commitment, to fulfill his duties while adhering to his beliefs.

Following his formal appointment to the academy on April 4, Sarao officially entered the facility on June 24, a date designated as In-Processing Day. He is currently completing a rigorous six-week basic training program designed for new recruits.

The new cadet secured his place at the academy backed by an impressive background. Beyond maintaining a standout academic record, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, earned a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo, and played for his varsity water polo team. His credentials also won him full scholarship offers from both the Air Force and Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, alongside admission offers from the University of Southern California and the University of Washington.

As one of the five federal service academies in the nation, the Colorado Springs campus integrates comprehensive undergraduate education with intensive leadership and military training. Upon graduation, cadets are formally commissioned as second lieutenants within either the US Air Force or the US Space Force.
