Zirakpur, July 28 — A 30-year-old woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ residence in Zirakpur on Sunday, prompting police to launch a probe into possible dowry-related abuse and murder.
The deceased, identified as Sushma, hailed from Kol village in Haryana’s Kaithal district. She had been married to Vishal Nafra since February 9, 2025.
According to her family, Sushma had been facing persistent harassment from her husband and in-laws over demands for additional dowry, particularly a car, despite having given substantial dowry at the time of marriage.
On Sunday around noon, her family said they received a call from her in-laws informing them that she had allegedly died by suicide. However, when they arrived at the house, they noticed injury marks on the back of her head, raising suspicions that she may have been murdered.
“We have sent the body to Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death,” said Inspector Satinder Singh, SHO of Zirakpur police station. “The father’s statement is being recorded. Further legal action will follow based on the autopsy findings and supporting evidence.”
Police have not confirmed any arrests yet and said the investigation is ongoing. The case has renewed focus on continuing dowry-related violence despite legal safeguards.
