NEW DELHI, August 20: — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta declared that an attack on her earlier today was a “cowardly attempt” to undermine her commitment to the people.1 In her first public statement since the incident, which occurred during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ (public hearing) at her Civil Lines camp office, she asserted that the attack has not broken her spirit and that the public hearing program will continue as planned.2
Writing on X in Hindi, Gupta mentioned that the attack “was not just an attack on me, but a cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi and work for the welfare of the people.”3 She noted that while she was initially “in shock” following the incident, she is now “feeling better.”4
Gupta emphasized that “such attacks can never break my spirit or my resolve to serve the people.5 Now, I will be among you with even more energy and dedication than before.” She added that her “greatest strength” comes from the trust and support of the public and that the public hearings and efforts to resolve citizens’ problems will continue with the “same seriousness and commitment as before.”6
She also requested that her well-wishers refrain from visiting her, adding, “I will soon be seen working among you again.”7 She concluded by expressing her “heartfelt gratitude for your immense love, blessings, and good wishes.”8
According to a senior police officer, the accused, identified as Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, a 41-year-old from Rajkot, Gujarat, has been detained.9 He is currently being jointly interrogated by the Intelligence Bureau and the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.10
