Anandpur Sahib, Aug. 30 – Panic gripped Anandpur Sahib on Thursday night after a group of armed men stormed into a café near the city’s bus stand and attacked one of its owners with sharp-edged weapons. Police have booked six men in connection with the assault.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at Jai Hacker Café, where Balwant Singh, one of the owners, was sitting with his friend Sujain Shah and a few customers. Singh told police that two SUVs pulled up outside the café before the assailants entered.
The attackers were identified as Arshi, Dharamvir alias Raja, Neeraj, Maninder alias Mani, and Vasu. Singh alleged that Arshi struck him with a kirpan, leaving an injury near his right wrist. He added that Dharamvir also attempted to hit him with a kirpan but he managed to step back in time.
“I was attacked suddenly inside my café. If I hadn’t moved away, the injury could have been far more serious,” Singh told the police in his statement.
Singh was taken to the Anandpur Sahib Civil Hospital by his friend Shah, where he received treatment for the wound.
Police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 109, 118(1), 351(2), 115(2), 190, 191(3) and 125(A), along with Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.
Ropar Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Singh Khurana said additional security measures had been taken in the city following the incident. “Patrolling has been increased around key public places to ensure peace and prevent any further disturbances,” Khurana noted.
