Dehradun, September 16 — Torrential overnight rains triggered flash floods and landslides across Uttarakhand on Tuesday, leaving homes and shops damaged, roads blocked, and several people missing. A death has been reported in Mussoorie, while officials confirmed that 300 to 400 people have been rescued and shifted to safety.
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said significant damage was reported from Sahastradhara and Maldevta in Dehradun, as well as Mussoorie. “Two to three people are said to be missing in Dehradun, and the death reported from Mussoorie is being verified,” he noted.
In Tehri, flooding left people stranded at Geeta Bhawan before they were rescued. In Nainital, heavy rainfall triggered a landslide that blocked a key road, officials said. Residents of Majhara village described escaping a landslide that struck their homes in the early hours and claimed some villagers were missing.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited rain-hit areas in Dehradun district to review the situation. “All rivers are in spate following heavy rains. Roads have been breached at 25 to 30 places. Approach roads are cut off. Houses and government properties have been damaged. Normal life is severely affected,” Dhami told reporters at Maldevta. “Rescue teams are working on a war footing to restore normalcy. The state government stands with every affected family.”
Earlier in the day, Dhami wrote on X that shops were damaged in Sahastradhara and said he was in constant touch with district authorities. “I am personally monitoring the situation. I pray to God for everyone’s safety,” he posted in Hindi.
The Chief Minister’s Office said Dhami has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who assured full support and pledged that the Union government “stands firmly with the people of Uttarakhand.”
Meanwhile, the swelling Song River inundated nearby areas, while waterlogging at Dehradun’s IT Park left vehicles stranded and offices flooded. “I have been stranded here since 5:30 a.m. The car has been submerged overnight, and water has entered basements and offices,” said Hrithik Sharma, a resident.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Hari Giri of Sadar said the situation remains volatile. “The water level is rising, and the flow is very strong right now. No deaths have been reported so far. Tourists were staying in the hotels,” he told PTI Videos.
