Chandigarh, Sept 26— In what officials described as a major achievement for the AAP government, global IT company Infosys Limited will expand its operations in Mohali with an investment of nearly ₹300 crore. The project is expected to generate 2,500 direct jobs and 210 indirect jobs, marking a significant boost for Punjab’s economy and its growing technology sector.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann credited the decision to his government’s “investment-friendly policies and vision for Punjab’s future.” Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora said Infosys had been operating in Mohali since 2017 with about 900 employees, and its expansion underscored the state’s rising appeal for global firms. “This investment is proof of the Punjab government’s commitment to creating an industry-friendly environment. By prioritizing local talent, we are ensuring sustainable and balanced development,” Arora noted.
In the first phase, Infosys will construct modern offices and support facilities across 300,000 square feet, designed to meet the LEED Platinum certification for eco-friendly buildings. Construction will begin on November 5, Gurpurab, and is expected to be completed within three years once regulatory approvals are in place. Arora said this step represented “not just a building project, but a historic move toward green development and modern technological infrastructure in Punjab.”
The second phase will cover an additional 480,000 square feet and is scheduled to begin only after the first phase is complete and all clearances are secured. Officials said this phased approach would ensure the project is executed “in an orderly, transparent and long-term beneficial manner.” Once both phases are completed, Mohali is expected to emerge as a major IT and service sector hub for northern India.
Infosys executives expressed appreciation for the support of the Punjab government, Invest Punjab, and GMADA in facilitating the expansion. The company assured that the project would be delivered on time. “With the government’s cooperation, Punjab’s youth will gain opportunities to compete on a global level,” company representatives said.
At a press conference announcing the project, Invest Punjab CEO Amit Dhaka (IAS), Punjab Development Council Vice Chairperson Seema Bansal, Infosys Regional Head (Infrastructure) Amol Ramesh Kulkarni, and Branch Development Centre Head Dr. Sameer Goyal were present. Their participation, officials said, demonstrated the state government’s emphasis on building partnerships with industry.
The Mann government described the Infosys expansion as more than an investment announcement, framing it as “evidence of Punjab’s transformation into a progressive and self-reliant state.” Officials said the project would not only create jobs but also cement Punjab’s reputation as a destination for cutting-edge industry.
“This milestone reflects our vision that development must bring opportunities to every young Punjabi,” Arora said. “Infosys’ decision confirms that Punjab is ready to stand among the leading states in technology and industry.”
