Work-focused governance transforms Jalalabad market

JALALABAD, Oct 6 — The Punjab government’s “work-focused politics,” has found a clear expression in Jalalabad’s fruit and vegetable market, where a new redevelopment project has transformed the lives of small traders and vendors, according to residents.

For years, street vendors faced traffic congestion, lack of space, and harsh weather while trying to make a living. That situation has now changed with a new, organized market space developed under the leadership of MLA Sardar Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy, a resident said,

The ₹3 crore project, whose foundation was laid in March 2024, has been completed and opened for public use.

The redesigned market provides shared, safe, and covered spaces for vendors, eliminating obstructions on main roads and improving traffic flow.

“The project includes essential facilities such as bathrooms, RO drinking water, cleanliness measures, and security.”

According to officials, these additions not only improve convenience but also restore dignity to those earning their livelihoods in the marketplace.

“This is a big relief for us,” said one of the vendors. “We thank them for doing such a significant work for the poor. Everyone seems very pleased.”

Residents and visitors have also noted the smoother traffic flow and better shopping environment. Street vendors can now continue their work comfortably through rain, heat, or cold without disruptions.

MLA Goldy said the initiative reflects the true meaning of “work politics” — understanding people’s problems and providing immediate, practical solutions. He noted that the project is part of a broader effort to make public spaces more efficient and inclusive.

The new market complements other recent infrastructure developments in Jalalabad, including improvements to the water supply and canal system worth ₹28 crore. Officials said these combined efforts aim to boost the local economy and improve living standards across the constituency.

The transformation of Jalalabad market, observers noted, stands as a model of the Aam Aadmi Party government’s people-centered approach — one that prioritizes work over words. The project underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring that elected representatives serve as problem-solvers rather than political figures detached from ground realities.

Punjab, residents say, is witnessing a visible shift in governance. Here, work now speaks louder than words.
