Rohtak/Chandigarh, 15 October 2025: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday met the family of assistant sub-inspector Sandeep Lathar, 41, who allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday evening at Ladhot village in Rohtak. Lathar, posted in the Rohtak cyber cell, reportedly shot himself in a relative’s makeshift room along the Ladhot-Dhamar road, leaving behind a “final note” and a six-minute video accusing late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar and his family of corruption.
Kumar, 52, who served as inspector general at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak’s Sunaria, had allegedly died by suicide at his Chandigarh residence on October 7. Lathar, from the Jat community, claimed he had “ample evidence” against Kumar, a Dalit officer.
A day before Kumar’s death, Lathar was part of the Rohtak CIA-2 team that intercepted and arrested Kumar’s associate Sushil Kumar, following a complaint by liquor contractor Praveen Bansal. Bansal alleged that Sushil Kumar sought ₹2.5 lakh in Kumar’s name while posted in Rohtak. In his note and video, Lathar said Kumar ended his life “to avoid family humiliation.”
Saini, accompanied by state ministers Mahipal Dhanda and Krishan Lal Panwar and BJP leader Manish Grover, met Lathar’s wife and children, assuring them of a fair probe. Lathar’s cousin, Sanjay Deswal, demanded registration of an FIR against Kumar’s family before consenting to the autopsy and requested that the last rites be conducted with full state honours.
Chandigarh Police have formed a six-member special investigation team to probe Kumar’s death.
