Punjab Roadways Union Threatens Statewide Bus Strike

Mohali, Nov 12: Bus services across Punjab are likely to be hit as the Punbus, Punjab Roadways, and PRTC Contract Workers Union has announced plans to suspend operations from Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning if their long-pending demands are not accepted by the state government.

Union leaders said the move could disrupt travel for thousands of passengers, including women who benefit from the state’s free travel scheme. “If our demands are not met in the meeting on November 12, we will stop all bus services across the state,” the union stated.

State presidents of the union, Russian Singh and Jagtar Singh, said the government had repeatedly failed to deliver on its promises. “Despite several assurances, no concrete step has been taken so far. The government had committed to regularizing temporary employees during elections, but the files are still pending,” they noted.

The union leaders warned that they would be “forced to launch a large-scale agitation” if the government continues to delay action. “We have waited long enough. If the government does not accept our demands, we will go on an indefinite strike,” they said.

Officials said discussions are expected to continue this week, though the standoff has raised concerns over possible transport disruption ahead of the festive travel rush.
